Students Build New Classroom to House the Maritime Simulator Lab and Music Studio
After school program Project SAIL students and Bayfront Alternative Education Program students built a new classroom for the maritime training simulator equipment and music studio. BMC is expanding the Buffalo Computer Graphics Simulator by adding two additional Radar student stations with ownship capabilities, utilizing funding from the Erie Community Foundation. Students learned to read and interpret architectural plans. They brushed up on their math skills using tape measures. These high school students used geometry to lay out the new walls, making them plumb and square. They learned new skills including cutting, fitting and fastening and using hand and power tools safely.

Careful measuring, cutting and fitting.

Fastening wall panels.
They learned to tape and coat sheetrock with drywall mud. They learned the proper procedures to prime and paint.

Priming and painting the new classroom.
They were introduced to several career paths during the process, and the skills and prerequisites needed for each. The construction process involves a lot of problem solving, using effective communication skills, working as a team, perseverance, completing each task, and planing ahead. They did a GREAT JOB and they know it, and are proud of their efforts.

The students meet the high expectations we set for their achievement.
