Bayfront Students Continue Working to Prepare the Niagara for Sailing.

January 15, 2010 | News & Events

Continuing our ongoing collaboration with the Erie Maritime Museum, the US Brig Niagara, and the Flagship Niagara League, Erie School District Alternative Education students helped move the Niagara one step closer to being ready for sailing in the spring. Along with Niagara Bosun Rob and volunteer Jeff, BCMS students and staff spent Thursday afternoon stripping varnish and linseed oil from blocks, and put a coat of paint on the main topsail lifts. On a large sailing vessel such as the Niagara, smoothly running blocks (pulleys) are essential for controlling the miles of rigging, and the rigging itself must be protected for safe operation. The work done by the students at BCMS is a small but vital step in keeping the Niagara in top shape!

Teamwork is the best tool for any project, especially when working on boats.
