Alexandria Seaport Foundation featured on NBC's Nightly News

December 10, 2009 | News & Events

The Alexandria Seaport Foundation (ASF) and its founder, Joe Youcha, were recognized during last night's edition of the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams. NBC reporter Norah O'Donnell profiled Youcha and interviewed ASF students and educators as part of the segment, "Making a Difference."

Watch the video here.

BCMS is proud to have collaborated with Youcha in the past, and is currently working to secure funding for a program based on ASF's model. BCMS will be giving a presentation at ASF's spring conference, Teaching with Small Boats.

Students profiled include Jerome Carpenter, who was in and out of prison with only an eighth grade education before earning his GED as part of ASF's Apprenticeship program. He says the program gives his life a sense of purpose. Another student, Rashea Lewis, was expelled from school, but tells NBC that although she is learning math and many other skills, she doesn't think of ASF as school. Ms. Lewis was also featured in a US Department of Labor news brief on American Recovery and Reinvestment Act stimulus money.
