Maritime Education Conference at the Bayfront Center for Maritime Studies

May 7, 2009 | News & Events

The Bayfront Center for Maritime Studies (BCMS), the Maritime Academy of Toledo (TMAT) the Ship Operations Cooperative Partnership (SOCP), and the Maritime Primary and Secondary Education Coalition, are hosting the first ever Great Lakes Region Primary and Secondary Maritime Education Conference at the BCMS waterfront campus on May 11th and 12th, 2009, in Erie, Pennsylvania.

There has been a growing movement nationally to encourage the development of maritime awareness and K-12 maritime education. Both BCMS and TMAT specialize and excel at creating programs that provide maritime access and training ranging from programs for elementary school students, to United States Coast Guard Masters License Certification courses.

The focus of the two day conference will be creating partnerships with businesses, agencies, and organizations that can further the development of schools, maritime career awareness programs, curriculum development, grant writing, student recruitment strategies, and developing collaborations that create additional opportunities for students, and careers in the maritime trades.

We are excited that this initiative has received national attention. Congresswoman Dahlkemper, 3rd District of Pennsylvania, will be addressing the attendees on Monday May 11th. Other participants include Anne Dougherty, the Maritime Administration Director of the Office of Maritime Workforce Development, Mr. Kevin McMonagle, Vice President of the American Steamship Company, Mr. Brendan O'Conner, Interlake Steamship Company, Kathy Sommers, D.Ed., Ohio Department of Education, Captain Arthur Sulzer representing the Ship Operations Cooperative Program (SOCP) and the Maritime Academy School in Philadelphia, Mrs. Renee Marazon, Superintendent of the Maritime Academy of Toledo, Mr. Mark Darcy from the Calhoon Marine Engineers Beneficial Association School of Marine Engineering, Ms. Sharon Jacker from the Harbor School in New York City, and representatives from the American Sail Training Association, The Great Lakes Maritime Institute, the Simulation Training Assessment Research (STAR) Center of Toledo, Buffalo Computer Graphics, the Western New York Maritime Academy, the Imani II Foundation, the Northwest Tri-county Intermediate Unit, and the School District City of Erie. The fee for both days is $110.
