Sawzall

Sawzall is our racing sloop. Sawzall was originally an S2 7.9 which was modified by Mike Kern. He took off 6 inches of freeboard... with a sawzall. He also removed the 700 pound dagger board and added the 1600 pound fixed fin keel. The rig was modified by adding a taller mast and changing the rig from a fractional rig to a full masthead rig. The next owner, Jim Moorhead, removed the outboard engine bracket and installed a BMW Marine Diesel engine which is still installed. It was donated to BMC by Jim Moorhead in 2002 and has been used for six consecutive summers with our sail training program. It has also been utilized by the PSU Behrend Sailing Club as a race training vessel, staffed with BMC coaches.

A sloop is a sailboat with a fore-and-aft rig and a single mast farther forward than the mast of a cutter. Sloops also differ from cutters because a sloop's fore-triangle is smaller than a cutter's, and sloops usually have only one headsail. A sloop's mast position is the most important factor in what makes it unique.
