Ice Boats

An ice boat resembles a sailboat in appearance, however, it is usually fitted with skis or runners designed to run over ice like skates.

Cold temperatures and smooth ice free of snow make for ideal ice boating conditions.

Students at the Bayfront Center For Maritime Studies helped build the Bellport Frostfish. This boat is a scooter type, which has no steering skate. Instead, it is steered with sail trim and by shifting crew weight fore and aft. The design evolved as a winter hunting, fishing and rescue boat on the south shore of Long Island, NY.
