An educational partnership Pennsylvania Sea Grant, the Department of Environmental Protection and Bayfront Center for Maritime Studies continue their partnership to present their award winning “Environmental Rediscoveries” program. Students from Millcreek Township School District; Bayfront Migrant IU/ESD Summer Program; Achievement Center; The Dr. Gertrude A. Barber Center’s Camp Connections and Camp Shamrock; Luther Memorial School; and Crawford Central School District’s, First District and Second District Elementary Schools all participated in this exciting, innovative program this season.

Sea Grant teachers David Boughton and Sara Grise, along with intern Karla Kaczmarek, joined Captain Jim McEnery aboard the Friendship Sloop, Momentum, for a sail on Presque Isle Bay.  Samples of water, plankton and sediment from the bottom of the bay were dredged and taken back to BCMS for further examination.  During the sifting of the sediment, students collected a variety of macro and micro invertebrates and placed them on slides.  The organisms were then viewed under microscopes and identified with the use of charts and books.

Students who participate in this educational experience tend to be inspired by our aquatic environment. It is found that students who have an appreciation for the beauty and significance of the Lake Erie watershed then become better stewards of their environment.
