This year’s Bayfront Migrant IU5/ESD Summer Program incorporated classes in reading, math, environmental science, basic boating, sailing, art, computer assistance/ESL, journaling, canoeing and lots of fun.  Our seventh summer program began on June 18th and ran through July 20th.  We met Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 2:30 pm and went on educational field trips every Wednesday.  Our field trips this year included a Fishing Derby at Presque Isle, a visit to the Tom Ridge Environmental Center, Mason Farms, the Erie Maritime Museum, Troyer Farms and catching an Erie Seawolves game.  We topped off a successful season with a Family Celebration Fiesta Day on July 20th

“Sailing” by student, Ismael Lopez

“Sailing was everybody’s favorite subject.  It was everybody’s favorite because we learned about knots, such as the bowline, cleat, rolling hitch and many more.  We also learned the different parts of a boat such as the port (left of boat), starboard (right part of boat), bow and stern.  We learned more parts such as the boom and mast.  After we knew all the little stuff we took out the boats, Taco, Ballerina and Sawzall.  We the students did all the work, we took out the boat, put up the sails, steered, lowered the sails and kept lookout. The sailing instructors were cool and lenient, they observed us, if we made a mistake they would correct us, tell us what to do, not take it from us like any other person would.  If we had any problems they will guide us.  The best thing about sailing is that they give you the opportunity to learn hands on and not have our face in a book.  It gives you a chance to experience sailing and think in the moment.  Shout out to the best teachers Ivan, Mike aka Banana, Kyle, Rich and Charlie.”
