Bayfront Migrant IU5/ESD Summer Program

Learning to kayak at the Bayfront Maritime Center

For the past thirteen years, the Bayfront Migrant Summer Program has provided enrichment opportunities for students throughout the area. Due to our partnership with the School District of the City of Erie and their ESL (English as a Second Language) Program, we served more students than ever. Over 75 students, speaking more than five different languages, from eight countries, including Mexico, Puerto Rico, Tanzania, Somalia, El Salvador, Kenya and Nepal participated in the program.

Executive Director, Richard Eisenberg, and his Bayfront Maritime Center staff provide unique hands-on learning experiences which focus on sailing, water safety, and other maritime skills. Students learned how to read a nautical chart, how to handle a variety of vessels on the water, how to identify parts of a boat, how to use a GPS and how to interpret weather forecasts and conditions. The students were given the opportunity to go canoeing, kayaking and sailing.

The primary objective for this summer's session was to increase literacy so a partnership was established with Edinboro University's Graduate Reading Specialist Program. The intent was to provide individualized instruction for eligible students as they participated in a reading clinic.

Students were also given instruction in the areas of Language Arts, Math, Wellness, Computer Skills, Art and Mexican culture. Students painted a beautiful mural and learned the art of Mexican culture through artistic expression, song and dance. After learning the parts of a boat, students built and painted their own model sailboats. Wellness activities included soccer. basket ball, jump rope and hula hooping!

Our schedule this year was Monday through Friday, June 20, 2011 through July 15, 2011 from 8 am.-2:30 pm with the exception of July 4th. Parent Night was held on June 17th and the Celebration Day was on July 15th. A special field trip took the students to Jerry Uht Park to watch an Erie Seawolves' baseball game. Building with blocks built on the CNC Router

Students experienced building with a ShopBot, a digital fabrication machine. Harold Rinn built a set of interlocking building blocks with the kids and many children designed and carved a wooden plaque with their name on it.
