Bayfront Migrant IU5/ESD Summer Program

Learning to kayak at the Bayfront Maritime Center
We are busy gearing up for our Summer Migrant Program 2012! The first boat is in the water and we are looking forward to smooth sailing on the bay! The program begins June 18, 2012 and ends July 20, 2012. See you all soon!
The local summer program began in 1999 at the Bayfront Maritime Center's waterfront campus. It is tailored to migrant students and students with little to no English proficiency. Children learn science, technology, engineering, arts and math, STEM subjects, through hands-on maritime activities.
The United States Department of Education recognized the Erie School District, the Bayfront Maritime Center, the Pennsylvania Department of Migrant Education, and the Northwest Pennsylvania Tri-County Intermediate Unit for their joint summer program, during the department's Office of Migrant Education Conference in Nashville November 14-17, 2011.
The Pennsylvania Department of Education's Migrant Education Program won the 2011 Excellence in Summer Learning Award from the National Summer Learning Association.
For the past thirteen years, the Bayfront Migrant Summer Program has provided enrichment opportunities for students throughout the area. Due to our partnership with the School District of the City of Erie and their ESL (English as a Second Language) Program, we serve more students than ever. Over 75 students, speaking more than five different languages, from eight countries, including Mexico, Puerto Rico, Tanzania, Somalia, El Salvador, Kenya and Nepal participated in the program last year.
Executive Director, Richard Eisenberg, and his Bayfront Maritime Center staff provide unique hands-on learning experiences which focus on sailing, water safety, and other maritime skills. Students learn how to read a nautical chart, how to handle a variety of vessels on the water, how to identify parts of a boat, how to use a GPS and how to interpret weather forecasts and conditions. The students are given the opportunity to go canoeing, kayaking and sailing.
The primary objective for this summer's session is to increase literacy so a partnership was established with Edinboro University's Graduate Reading Specialist Program. The intent is to provide individualized instruction for eligible students as they participated in a reading clinic.
Students are also given instruction in the areas of Language Arts, Math, Wellness, Computer Skills, Art and Mexican culture. Last year students painted a beautiful mural and learned the art of Mexican culture through artistic expression, song and dance. After learning the parts of a boat, students built and painted their own model sailboats. Wellness activities included soccer. basket ball, jump rope and hula hooping!
